San Pedro Bay Ports needed a web developer skilled at creating technical websites to manage the data from their six air quality monitoring stations. West Hills Web had what they needed.
The San Pedro Bay Ports include the Port of Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles. The two ports began an effort to monitor and improve the air quality in and around the ports in 2006 as was most recently updated in the Harbor Commission 2017 Clean Air Action Plan. One component of the Plan called for the installation of air quality monitoring stations plus the reporting of that data on a public website with the goal of making the San Pedro Bay Ports the cleanest container port complex in the world.
The San Pedro Bay Ports website states,
“Each Port’s monitoring stations collect real-time measurements for various air pollutants, including ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and particulate matter. The stations may also be used to collect other environmental data, which can be used for different environmental studies. The real-time environmental data collected by these stations is available for public review on this website. The data can be queried and viewed in several formats.”
The project’s prime contractor installed six stations located within both Ports and in the adjacent communities. But the web developer who was managing the website that published the data was not responsive to requests and the data was not well presented.
Unusual Web Developer Requirements for a Highly Specialized Website
So the prime contractor went in search of a new website development company. Capturing, managing, presenting, and providing public access to this data demanded a web developer skilled in building technical and specialty websites with database creation and management expertise. In addition, the developer had to be a Los Angeles Certified Small Business Web Developer.
Armed with these requirements and detailed performance specifications, the project’s prime contractor began looking for the perfect match. In addition, the prime contractor sought the following characteristics in their developer choice:
- Highly responsive
- Emphasis on and dedication to quality
- Able to understand the air quality monitoring science
- Database design, creation, and management experience
- Easy to work with both the technical and management teams of the prime contractor
They found exactly what the project needed in West Hills Web.

And the website exceeds all performance levels specified in the project requirements.
Here’s what the prime contractor says about our performance:
“We were looking for a certified Los Angeles small business web developer who could take on such a big project for the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and handle the millions of air quality data points required. Mark Widawer and his team at West Hills Web were extremely easy to work with from the project’s inception. The Ports are happy, the community is happy, and we’re happy to have found West Hills Web for this project.”
