Choosing a Web Developer To Build Your Specialty or Technical Business Can be Frustrating
If you get frustrated when trying to explain your specialty or technical business to a new friend at a cocktail party, imagine how much more difficult it would be to explain your business, in far more detail, to a web developer who has absolutely no idea what you do, how you do it, and why it’s so special.
At West Hills Web, we’re the pain reliever for your marketing frustrations.
Company President Mark Widawer has been involved in tech for over 40 years, and has a knack for quickly understanding almost any specialty or technical business, converting that knowledge into the language of your ideal prospects, conveying your company’s expertise, and helping you turn those prospects into clients.
We’ve built sites in such specialty fields as Fintech, Autism, Corporate Benefits, Law, Medicine, Supplement Manufacturing, Finance, Private Investigations, Home Automation, and more.
You’ve got a problem.
You know you need a new website, but your technical or specialty business is…complicated.
Sometimes, it’s difficult to explain to prospects not only WHAT you do and WHY they
need you, but also what makes your company DIFFERENT and BETTER than all your competitors.
Plus, you just DON’T have the time to try to turn what you know about your business
into words on a page.
It’s tedious, and you KNOW it.
At West Hills Web, we specialize in making websites for companies like yours.
The more intricate and difficult it is to understand, the more right we are for each
other.
We take the responsibility to understand what you do, who your prospect is, and how your
solution fits exactly with what THEY need.

Your Business Website Has Three Jobs
Technical or not, your website has only three jobs:
- To Attract New Traffic from people looking in search engines -- namely Google -- for what you do.
- To Add Credibility to your business in the eyes of its visitors, whether they arrive from Google Searches, paid advertising, from your own personal networking activity or from other referrals.
- To Convert your website traffic from Visitors to Prospects, and from Prospects to Clients (or Customers).
If your website isn’t doing all three of those things, it’s hurting your business, not helping it.
And while accomplishing all three of those things is as much Art as Technology (with a little bit of magic to make it extra special) doing them all together is not as easy as it might seem…especially if your business is a specialty or technical business.

Your business is unique, as are your clients and target market. Your website needs to do more than simply describe what you do, and how you do it. It needs to make your business the obvious choice. We specialize in websites for Specialty and Technical businesses like yours.
Why Some Website Projects Don't Go As Planned
Prior to building a new website for a company, we talk with our clients about their current websites. What we’ve discovered is not only that the end result was fair to poor, but their experience of building the website wasn’t good either.
Here’s what we found:

We built a high-performing website for Vault Box and their specialty business that allows them to run huge, highly profitable product launches.
- The web developer expected the business owners to write all the content.
- The web developer failed to listen to the business owner about the purpose and special nature of the business, design preferences, or other requests of the business owner.
- Much of the planning, graphical and follow-up work landed on our business owner’s desk, and not the web developer’s.
- The web developer didn’t effectively communicate well with the business owner.
- The web developer sometimes disappeared for weeks or months during the development process.
- The project was often delayed.
- The result was an average-looking website that failed to impress the business owner, let alone the target audience.
- The website failed to rank well on Google.
- The website did a poor job helping to convert visitors to prospects and prospects to clients.
- The developer is unable or unwilling to help to maintain the website, often because they’ve changed careers.
Our process avoids all of these problems and more because of the way we do things here at West Hills Web. Our process is built around our clients’ businesses and the realities of their busy work days. We take responsibility for the process every step of the way, while continually incorporating your feedback into the process.
If you don't read anything else on this page, read this:
- WE take the responsibility to learn about your specialty or technical business, YOUR needs, problems and goals.
- WE take the responsibility to learn about the target audience, THEIR needs, problems and goals.
- WE take the responsibility for writing the content.
- WE take the responsibility for creating a stunning design based on your input.
- WE take the responsibility for communicating with you and making sure you remain informed every step of the way.
- WE take the responsibility for moving the project forward.
- WE take the responsibility to make sure that we get it right.
All that said, YOU, our client, get to review and comment on everything we do for you so that you end up with a website that represents your business accurately and of which you can be proud.

The Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach are required to report on the air quality at both ports as part of the Clean Air Action Plan. They maintain instruments at air quality monitoring stations throughout the Ports which send data to our servers. Our custom software collects that data and the website that we developed provides an easy-to-use way for community members and other interested parties to view the Ports’ air quality information.

Website Design For Specialty Or Technical Businesses
Looking great with an appropriate, attractive and innovative design brings credibility to a website the moment a visitor lays eyes on it, even before a word is read and understood.
Our unique process incorporates your company’s logo, colors, mission, passion, perspective and customer profiles to develop a website design that creates instant trust for your target audience.
For example, if our client’s goal is built around strength, perseverance, knowledge and expertise, then that’s what the website will reflect.
On the other hand, if the target audience is more oriented towards beauty, aesthetics and artistic vision, we build a site with those attributes in mind. Every website is built custom for each client.
Have a look at these two websites to see how different they can be.
Employee benefits is an extremely complex and technical business. RhinoEB.com has a can-do, get-it-done-for-their-clients attitude, and their specialty website needed to not only demonstrate that, but proudly display their “Rhino” branding and inspiration.
InvitationMaven.com‘s trade secret is spectacular design and creativity. Although it doesn’t seem to be a technical website, what this artist does is certainly a specialty. She makes events like Weddings, Corporate Events and other Life-Cycle events come alive with specialized paper, fonts, printing processes, timing and systems. This specialty website needed to not only discuss but demonstrate her differentiating factors using soft colors and flowing design.
Website Content For Specialty Or Technical Businesses
Of course, websites need words — what we call “content” — and our clients are each experts in their own fields so they *should* be able to write their own content. But what we’ve found is that business owners and managers don’t often have the time to write 7,000 to 10,000 words about their business (about average for a business website).
Nor is it the best, highest use of their time…or YOUR time
You have a business to run, not a website to build.
Websites built by conventional developers tend to stall because the developer specifically disclaims any responsibility to write the website content, and waits for the client to provide the text.
Our website development process avoids that problem.
But even worse is that because the site owners or high level managers (the company’s Subject Matter Experts) suffer from “The Curse of Knowledge“, which means that they often struggle to explain what they do in simple enough terms for their target audience to appreciate or understand.
Of course, in some cases the target audience is extremely knowledgeable, and also are experts in what they do. In that case, our process creates content at that higher level of expertise.
Our content development process includes stressless interviews with our clients and their Subject Matter Experts. We focus not just on the who/what/where/when of the technical parts of the business, but our client’s differentiating factors that make their business a more compelling and better choice than their competitors.

In our increasingly complex world, financial technology is incredibly complicated. CascadeFintech.com, a leading FinTech company, wanted their technical website to speak effectively about both financial regulations and technology to their target markets who may be building their first financial products.

Our expert content creation methods not only tells your target audience what you do, but makes it clear you are the best choice, and ranks extremely high on Google for many of your search terms. Everything in green in this small screenshot is on page 1 of Google, and most are in position 1…right at the top.
What About Search Engine Rankings?
While no one can or should promise a page-one result on Google for a particular keyword, we are very, very successful and have a long history of ranking extremely well on Google for our clients’ most important keywords. Many of our clients rank on page one for a large percentage of the keywords we compete for.
- We have medical specialists who rank on page one for several dozen keywords, each of which brings a steady flow of new patients to the practice.
- Our financial technology client ranks on page 1 for the most competitive keyword that describes what they do, as well as many other keywords.
- We have two separate home automation specialists who each rank number one for their most important keywords, one nationally and one for their specific region.
Website Conversion: From Visitors To Prospects To Clients
Most Subject Matter Experts (including Business Owners) aren’t trained in writing for sales. As a result, the content they write is often filled with facts and details, but very little to motivate the target audience to buy.
Our perspective, when writing website content for specialty and technical businesses, is to educate overtly, and sell covertly.
Rather than writing content that beats the reader over the head with messages to “buy, buy buy”, or content that avoids sales language entirely, we write sales content in a way that makes our clients the obvious choice for their target audience.
In an environment where businesses need to fight for every sale, your specialty or technical business needs to do all it can to convert as many website visitors as possible to leads, and then help to convert those leads to clients.
Our websites do that very effectively.

Lutron is an ultra high-end home automation system. Every new visitor to the site can be worth tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Search for “Lutron Dealer” and our client, Citrom.com, will show up as the first dealer on Google. We have created content for Citrom for over a dozen revenue-generating keywords for them, each of which that leads directly to new sales.

Do You Know About Website Compliance?

Making Your Website ADA Compliant
You’re already familiar with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), because you’ve seen the wheelchair ramps, wide doorways, handicapped parking spaces, braille text on signs, and other accommodations to public businesses, buildings and spaces.
What you might not know is that business websites also need to be ADA compliant. Generally speaking, that means that people who have low vision, are totally blind, are deaf, have cognitive impairment or motor disabilities ALL need to have equal access to your website.
It’s the law, and companies with websites that are not ADA compliant are being sued at an alarming rate for tens of thousands, and sometimes hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars. “Professional Plaintiffs” are searching every day for websites that are not ADA compliant and then filing lawsuits that could potentially put small businesses out of business. Businesses like these are referred by colleagues, attorneys and other trusted advisors to our Website ADA Compliance service to help them avoid being the subject of ADA Compliance lawsuits.
It’s our practice to inform all of our clients of the requirement to build websites with ADA compliance in mind, and then to build sites for them that are ADA compliant.
Making Your Website Secure and Privacy Compliant
- GDPR Privacy Compliance -- This European law protects EU residents and visitors no matter where they are or what websites they visit. It is the view of many attorneys and legal authorities that all websites worldwide must comply with the GDPR.
- CCPA Privacy Compliance -- This California privacy law only applies to a small fraction of business websites based on the business meeting or exceeding three business thresholds. We’re happy to help you determine if the CCPA applies to your business, and if it does, we’ll help your website become CCPA compliant.
- USA Privacy Compliance -- The rest of the USA has a patchwork of various data privacy laws. We’ll configure your website with the tools you need to be generally compliant nationwide.
And all of that should be backed by a website that helps to secure any data that is entered or stored on your website. Don’t let someone build you a website without all of the important legal protections you need.
Your website should bring you new business, not put you at risk for lawsuits or data breaches.

Our division, WebCompliancePro.com focuses on website compliance, in particular ADA compliance and Privacy Compliance. Companies are being sued because their websites are not ADA compliant. Make sure your next website is ADA compliant, and “Let Someone Else Be The Target.”
